Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who survived a 2011 attempt on her life in a mass shooting in Tuscon, Ariz., was honored Saturday by Scripps College.

Giffords, a 1993 graduate of Scripps, was given the Ellen Browning Scripps Medal, an honor given to women whose pioneering accomplishments make a significant difference in the life opportunities of other women. Giffords is only the third recipient of the honor, following Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1994 and Sandra Day O'Connor in 1998. Giffords is the first alumna to be given the medal.
