Pomona College Professor Gene Fowler lost his battle with a serious illness at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center on Nov. 1.

Pomona College officials recently announced the passing of Gene Fowler, a professor of biology, who lost his battle with a serious illness at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center on Nov. 1.

Professor Fowler joined the Pomona faculty in 1993 as an assistant professor of biology.  He taught many courses in biology, including Conservation Biology and Comparative Endocrinology.

“He was a staunch supporter of the Environmental Analysis program and was for many years the faculty advisor for students enrolled in the environmental biology track of the EA major,” according to a news release issued by the college. “He also served as director of the Bernard Field Station for many years.”

Professor Fowler received a B.S. with honors in biological conservation from California State University, Sacramento; an M.S. in wildland resource science from UC Berkeley; and a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Washington, college officials wrote.

He is survived by his wife Cynthia Peters and son Zachary; his parents, Murray and Audrey Fowler; and siblings Alan Fowler, Linda Allen, Tricia Craft and Janet Akema, and their families.

There will be a "Celebration of Life" for Professor Fowler and the people whose lives he touched at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24 in Little Bridges (Bridges Hall of Music) at Pomona College, 150 E. Fourth St. A reception follows.

If you are interested in making a donation in his memory, organizers ask please consider the Claremont Educational Foundation or the California State Parks Foundation.

@Muslim radicals are the problem here. This jihad/war whatever the hell you want to call it, willRead More never end in our lifetime. Ultimately the Muslims will win. Look no further than Europe. Unless there is a full fledged worldwide war, they really can't be stopped. Their numbers are too great. What we are doing in Afghanistan is nothing more than swatting away a bee every time one flies out of the hive. But there are millions still in the hive. Unless we close our borders to people from the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe, what happened in Boston will continue. It's not racist to not like Muslims just like it wasn't racist to not like the Russians during the Cold War or Germans during WWII.

Thanks to these two scum brothers, I can no longer transport my hearty meals in my trusty pressureRead More cooker via backpack. As an alternative, I tried to fit a crock pot, but it ruined my backpack zipper and made a meatball/marinara mess inside my backpack; even making way into the USB ports of my laptop. Sorry, tupperware won't cut it. It just gets too hot and eventually leaves a huge welt on my back.
