Diamond Bar To Honor Morgan

The city is collecting pages for a book that will be given to the United States women's soccer team gold medalist.

Her header in the 123rd minute was one of the top moments from the recently completed 2012 London Olympics.

Now, the city of Diamond Bar is working on a way to congratulate one of their own.

Starting today, the city of Diamond Bar will be collecting pages to be put into a book to give to Alex Morgan, the Diamond Bar native who played a huge role in the United States' gold-medal winning performance in women's soccer.

In response to numerous requests from residents, the city has created message sheets for residents to pick up and write out their own message for Morgan, who went to Diamond Bar High.

"Diamond Bar is a very tight-knit community and residents are big in community spirit," said Cecilia Arellano, the city's public information coordinator. "When someone from our 60,000 member family accomplishes something amazing, we all share in their success.

"Rather than issue a congratulatory certificate solely on behalf of the City, members of the City Council felt it would be more meaningful to make the community part of the recognition."

Although the program is officially launching today, some community members started Wednesday during the Concerts in the Park series, Arellano said.

The sheets are available during normal business hours at three locations: City Hall, 21810 Copley Drive; Diamond Bar Community Library, 21800 Copley Drive; and Diamond Bar Center, 1600 Grand Ave.

The city will be collecting the sheets through Oct. 1, after which they will be bound into a keepsake book for Morgan. The book will be presented to Morgan and/or her family at their earliest availability and convenience, according to the release.

For information, contact the city at 909-839-7055.
