Wilderness Park Closed While Authorities Search for Hiker

Fire crews and search and rescue are looking for whoever cried out for help at Claremont's Wilderness Park.

UPDATE AT NOON:

The Claremont Wilderness Park will remain closed until police and fire officials can determine who was calling yelling for help and where they are, police officials said today.

Fire crews and police have been searching since 8:49 this morning for whoever cried out for help. A hiker walking along a trail heard them about a mile up from the trailhead, said Claremont Lt. Shelly Vander Veen.

Since then, a search and rescue team and helicopter joined the search, Vander Veen said. At 10:10 a.m., they closed down the park because of all the emergency vehicles, she said.

The search area was expanded following a second report, at 11:30 a.m., that someone was calling for help in the area near the park’s gazebo, about two miles up, Vander Veen said.
