Pomona Man Charged Will Illegal Possession of Weapons Cache

Ky Cheng, an Army veteran, is currently in Los Angeles County Jail serving a three-year sentence for violating the terms of his probation in a 2010 case. The weapons charge stems from a probation search by Pomona Police.

A 43-year-old Pomona man was charged with illegally possessing a cache of weapons by military investigators, and faces a court-martial, Pomona police said Saturday.

Ky Cheng, an Army veteran, had previously been convicted of possessing child pornography in 2007, according to a Pomona department statement. He was
convicted in the Los Angeles Superior Court of failing to register as a sex offender in 2010 and is currently in Los Angeles County Jail serving a three-year sentence for violating the terms of his probation in the 2010 case.

If Cheng is convicted of the weapons charge in a court-martial in the military justice system, he would face a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in federal prison, police said.

The weapons charge stems from a probation search that was conducted as a part of a three-week Pomona Police Department multi-agency violence suppression detail which focused on suppressing gang violence and high risk sex offenders.

Although police did not disclose when or where they found the cache of weapons, authorities said Cheng illegally possessed eight .45-caliber handguns, two 12-gauge shotguns, one .308-caliber rifle, 46 high-capacity ammunition magazines and approximately 1,200 rounds of ammunition.
