More than 1,500 People Arrested on DUI Charges Since Aug. 16 in L.A. County

The arrests coincide with a national anti-DUI crackdown and special Avoid the 100 operations in Los Angeles County. The operations continue through the Labor Day weekend.

Los Angeles County law enforcement agencies have arrested more than 1,500 people in the first 13 days of an end-of-summer anti-DUI campaign, the sheriff's department reports.

Provisional figures indicate that a total of 1,546 people were arrested on DUI charges between Aug. 16 and midnight Wednesday, according to an announcement by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.  That's a slight increase from 2012, during with 1,418 people were arrested during the same 13-day time span, the agency said.


Officers representing 100 county law enforcement agencies made the arrests, as a part of the Avoid the 100 task force.  A special crackdown continues through this Labor Day weekend.

"For this Labor Day Holiday weekend, extra DUI saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints will be deployed in multiple cities in Los Angeles County," the sheriff's department announced.  "In addition, all regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts and the CHP will be deploying all available officers onto freeways and county roads during their Maximum Enforcement Period this weekend beginning 6:00 p.m. Friday."
