Los Angeles County Officers Plan Summer DUI Crackdown

Starting this weekend, law enforcement agencies throughout Los Angeles County will step up their DUI efforts for a two-week crackdown on drunk driving.

The crackdown will include high visibility of police officers, 64 DUI and driver’s license checkpoints and 173 roving saturation patrols throughout Los Angeles County from Aug. 16 through Sept. 2. Law enforcement agencies from the East San Gabriel Valley, including Glendora, Azusa, Claremont and La Verne, will host a DUI checkpoint in an undisclosed location Friday, Aug. 23.

“Every year, about one third of all motor vehicle traffic deaths involve one or more drunk drivers or motorcycle operators,” said Glendora Police Chief Rob Castro in a statement. “In 2011, 9,878 people died in crashes involving drunk drivers. That works out to approximately one drunk driving fatality every 53 minutes. In California, 774 died due to the crime of impaired driving.”
