Brush Fire Breaks Out Close to Homes in La Verne

Update 4:20 p.m.: 

More accurate mapping of the fire which burned in the La Verne foothills Friday afternoon has indicated the actual size of the blaze was a 27 acres, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The agency said at around 3:45 p.m., some units were being released from the scene.

Update 3 p.m.: 

The Los Angeles County Fire Department now reports a fire burning in the foothills of La Verne at 40 acres in size.

The agency tweeted the latest figure just before 3 p.m., followed by an announcement that the Canyon Fire is estimated at 80 percent contained.

Update 2:15 p.m.: 

The Los Angeles County Fire Department tells Patch the Canyon Fire is now estimated at three acres in size.

According to Inspector Keith Mora of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the blaze is burning in fuels about two to six feet high and some 115 firefighters are now assigned to the second alarm blaze.

No evacuations have been ordered by the fire department, however the agency is assisting homeowners in the area who are voluntarily leaving their homes, Mora told Patch in a telephone interview.

The Claremont Police Department says they have evacuated the Webb Schools, about two miles from the foothill fire.

"At this time, The Webb School has been evacuated, but there are no more evacuations in effect," a message from the department stated at 2:05 p.m.  "If the fire impacts Claremont residents any further, and there is a need for more evacuations, we will immediately notify you."

A brush fire is burning near Broken Spur Lane and Rough Rider Road in La Verne, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The Canyon Fire broke out shortly before 1 p.m., according to Inspector Keith Mora of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

This photo tweeted by the fire department's public information office was taken by ABC 7 and shows flames approaching in on a hillside home as it burns uphill.

That agency reports the fire had spread to 8 acres by 1:35 p.m.

Two Super Scooper aircraft and three helicopters were assigned to the firefighting effort.
