Claremont Graduate School Prepares for Shakeout

The school will be sending out texts, emails and make phone call notifications to let students and staff know when the drill has begun.

Claremont Graduate University is scheduled to participate in the California Shakeout drill scheduled for 10:18 a.m.

As part of the drill, students, staff and faculty will receive a phone call, email, and/or text notification from the school's Connect Ed system notifying them to start the drill and another notification to end it.

“We are asking students, faculty, and staff to stop their activities at that time and take a cover position,” officials wrote in a news release. “When you receive the notification that the ‘earthquake’ is underway, stop your activities, and move into a safe position as if you were experiencing a real earthquake. Wait for the all-clear notification before resuming your normal activities. We will not be doing an evacuation drill.”

There are also numerous smaller faults all along the foothills north of Claremont. There are also unknown fault zones. Some become aware of some faults after an earthquake. The 1994 Northridge quake was on a previously unknown fault. When it ruptured it measured 6.7 on the Richter Scale and caused billions of dollars in damage and many fatalities, officials wrote.

“It is important for all Californians to educate themselves on earthquake hazards,” according to the news release. “There are several good websites with important information to protect your family and your property."
