UPDATED: Man is Killed by Metrolink Train in Claremont

The man was killed about 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 4.

A pedestrian struck by a Metrolink train and killed today in Claremont has been identified by Claremont Police as 60-year-old Michael Patrick Rodriguez, of Claremont.

Rodriguez died about 6 a.m. at the scene of the collision near Indian Hill Boulevard and Santa Fe Street, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Claremont Police officers quickly descended on the scene. They were still investigating as of late Tuesday. Early in the investigation, Lt. Mike Ciszek said there was no evidence of suicide.

Officials said Rodriguez was walking southbound on Indian Hill Boulevard on the west side of the street, when he was struck by a westbound Metrolink commuter train.

Jeff Lustgarten of Metrolink said train number 383, westbound on the San Bernardino Line, was carrying about 350 passengers, and no one was hurt on the train. The passengers were transferred to another train, and there were some delays reported on other trains.

Within a couple of hours, officials were allowing trains to pass slowly through the area on a second track while the investigation was being conducted.

This is not the first time people have been killed by trains in the city, Ciszek said. There have been at least four others, he said.
