Epilepsy California recently honored Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) for his role as author of Senate Bill 161, which moves to protect children with epilepsy.
The group held a ceremony in Huff’s honor near the “Love Your Brain Now” bus and in front of a large inflatable "Big Brain" near the South Steps of the State Capitol in Sacramento
It was held Dec. 3, as part of a pop-up exhibit delivering messages about the importance of protecting and caring for the brain.
According to a news release by PR Web, SB 161 passed despite heavy opposition. It authorizes trained, unlicensed personnel to administer a life-saving emergency seizure rescue medication to students with epilepsy in California schools, according to the statement.
"I am deeply honored to receive recognition from such an admirable organization as the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles and their statewide advocacy network, Epilepsy California," Huff is quoted in the news release. "Working with Epilepsy California to protect students in public schools really was a labor of love."
Epilepsy advocates, families and representatives from Epilepsy California, Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles and Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County. Advocates attended the event, spending the day greeting new legislators and delivering information about epilepsy, personally thanking Senators and Assemblymembers for voting in support of SB 161 and also welcoming legislative staff and members of the public to the brain exhibit, according to the news release.
"The passage of the bill represented major progress for our children and we thank Senator Huff for his leadership." said Neva Hirschkorn, a parent advocate with Epilepsy California.
The “Love Your Brain Now” Bus Tour launched in Los Angeles on October 28, 2012 and has since traveled throughout California to educate students and the public-at-large about ways to prevent brain trauma and seizures, while sharing ways for those with epilepsy to reduce seizures, and for everyone to learn seizure first aid.
